Extn. 266. Forensic Science Laboratory,
Our Ref: L.570/58 Cyprus Police Force Headquarters,
Nicosia.
22nd November, 1958.
Superintendent of Police,
Divisional Police Headquarters,
Kyrenia.
Subject: Examination of material exhibits (firearms).
Reference: Your – Capture of three E.O.K.A. terrorists and seizure
of arms and equipment at Kato Dhikomo village on 19.11.58.
The exhibits submitted per B/Sergeant Smith at
8.40 a.m. on 20th November, 1958 have been examined with the following
results.
1. The Sub machine Carbine caliber .45 “Guide M/3”
No. 354557 has been tested and found serviceable.
S.M.C. No. 354557 has been identified as the weapon used to discharge
crime cartridge cases and projectiles previously submitted under
reference:
a) Ambush of Turkish car on Temblos-Kyrenia
Road on 4.8.58. Kyrenia RCI 236/58 and Laboratory Ref. L. 311/58
(twelve expended cartridge cases), the second weapon used.
b) The murder of Savvas Solomou on 2.10.58,
Kyrenia RCI 329 and Laboratory Ref. L. 461/58 (three expended cartridge
cases and one expended projectile) “second weapon used”.
c) The nine expended cartridge cases caliber
.45 together with an expended fragmentated outer copper projectile
jacket caliber .45 (said to be from the “hide” (submitted per British
Sergeant Smith at 12 noon on 20.11.58).
2. The Sub machine Carbine caliber 9 mm “Sterling”
No. K.R. 3563 was found to be in a mechanically unserviceable condition
on initial examination. The weapon has been subjected to the expansion
of high explosive gases.
However, the bolt mechanism on S.M.C. K.R. 3563 was used in another
similar type weapon and as a result of which it was established
that S.M.C. K.R. 3563 was originally responsible for the discharge
of crime cartridge cases previously submitted under reference:
(i) Ambush of Turkish car on the Temblos_Kyrenia
Road on 4.8.58. Kyrenia RCI 236.58, Laboratory Ref. 311.58 refer.
(sixteen expended cartridge cases) “second weapon used”.
(ii) Ambush of Military Patrol Wiltshire
Regiment near Karavas on 9.9.58. Kyrenia and Laboratory Ref. L.
401.58 (eight expended cartridge cases) “Second weapon used”.
(iii) Expended caliber 9mm cartridge found
in the breach of the weapon on initial examination to this Laboratory
on 20.11.58.
S.M.C. K.R. 3563 was stolen from Kyrenia Police Station during a
terrorist attack on 8.9.1956, Police Gazette Supplement No. 3 dated
7.9.56 refers.
3. Of the 63 cartridges caliber .45 auto., three
have been discharged for control purposes.
Of the 147 cartridges caliber 9mm auto., three have been discharged
for control purposes. The remainder have not been tested. (it was
noticed that no less than 30 cartridges contained in the bulk seizure
were the German Service high Velocity “1500 feet per second Smicer
type ammunition. This would appear to be a recent acquisition to
terrorist stocks).
4. The eight fragments of metal contained in the
glass bottle (submitted per Inspector Cox at 12 noon on 20.11.58
and marked from P.M. Dr. Sanerkin), have been identified as metal
fragments from the British Service Mills No. 36 hand grenade.
5. The clothing of the deceased consisting of one
pair of blue cloth trousers, one blue woolen pullover, one cotton
vest and one cotton under pants, showed evidence of having been
subjected to the explosive force and fragmentation of a missile
of the hand grenade type, on explosion the grenade was almost in
contact with the right trouser leg with an area of fragmentation
on the buttocks and small of the back. This tends to show that the
human element was in a crouched or kneeling position at the time
of the explosion.
6. The remainder of the exhibits consist of the
following items:-
(i) Three magazines caliber 45” Guide
M/3”.
(ii) One magazine caliber 9 mm Sterling
S.M.C.
(iii) One pair of eye-glasses.
(iv) Two small clasp knives.
(v) One pair of hair clippers.
(vi) One flash light.
(vii) One Military pattern web belt.
(viii) One civilian pattern waist belt.
(ix) One Military type water bottle.
(x) One fly-off lever Mills No. 36 hand
grenade.
(xi) One pair of 7x50 binoculars No. 12630
(this item has not been reported lost or stolen).
(xii) One portable Greek language typewriter,
Make “Empire” No. S2/321168. (This item has not been reported stolen).
(xiii) One concrete slab fitted with four
tiles. This is similar to the “hide” cover used in the Nicosia area
and used on previous occasions. A fragment of a Greek language newspaper
stuck in the concrete at the time of casting is dated 18th September,
1958.
(xiv) Three drain clearing plungers. These may be used as suction
lifters to the concrete “hide” cover.

Chief Superintendent.
As a point of interest and for future operational intelligence the
following weapons are still outstanding in the Kyrenia Police Station
District:-
(i) One S.M.C. “Guide M/3” (associated
weapon used on 9.9.58. Laboratory Ref. L. 401.58 refers).
(ii) One Colt Service Automatic Pistol
caliber .45 (used on 2.10.58 associated weapon with “Guide m/3”
Kyrenia RCI 329.58 and Laboratory Ref. L. 461.58 refer).
(iii) Five caliber 9 mm Sub machine Carbines.
(iv) One caliber 32 revolver.
(v) One caliber 9 mm (short) Beretta automatic
self loading pistol.
(vi) Two revolvers caliber .380 Webley
and Scott type.
(vii) 19 shotguns.
(viii) 6 .303 rifles.
It may be of assistance in similar type operations if the operators
searching for a concealed “hide” are instructed that a bucket of
water applied to the suspected surface whether of tiles, concrete
or beaten earth often gives a clear indication of the position of
the “hide” cover or lid.
