GEE/820/58
Government Explosives Officer,
Force Headquarters, NICOSIA.
21th November, 1958.
Superintendent of Police,
Kyrenia.
Examination of terrorist hide at house of Kyriakos Christodoulou in
Kato-Dhikomo village, 1700 hours, 19th November, 1958.
1. A visit was made to the above location at 1700
hrs. 19th November, 1958. I saw a hole in the floor of a room, at
the rear of the house; this hole was rectangular and measured approximately
16 x 16”. Inside the hole I saw a body and it was decided that I should
certify it safe to remove in the event of there being some form of
explosives or ammunition in a dangerous condition under the body.
2. This I did and certified that the body could be
removed with the aid of ropes. I tied a rope around the wrists of
the body and superintended the removal with the assistance of a C.I.D.
officer. No one but myself entered the hide. After the removal of
the body by C.I.D. I again entered the hole and recovered the following:-
a) One .45 Sub-Machine Gun
b) One magazine fitted to above weapon (empty)
c) One magazine for above weapon containing
24 rounds
d) One magazine for above weapon containing
15 rounds
e) One Sterling Sub-machine Gun
f) One magazine for Sterling containing
10 rounds of ammo.
g) 132 rounds of 9 m.m ammunition in cloth
bag
3. The hide was then sealed as it contained bombs
and explosives which were covered by earth rubble. This was carried
out by me.
4. At 0900 hours 20th November, 1958, I opened the
sealed hide and made a search. Inside the hide was a further recovery
of various ammunition, a magazine housing for a Sterling gun, 26 .45
cartridges, 2 9mm. cartridges, 9 expended .45 cartridge cases and
a fragment of the copper envelope from a bullet. I handed this property
up through the hide entrance to Detective Sergeant Smith.
5. A further search revealed buried explosives which
contained Fulminate of Mercury, Dynamite and Home-made Electric Detonators,
also a service gas grenade which had misfired, and an estimated figure
of 15 home-made bombs scattered about under the rubble. It was decided
not to interfere with these explosives and bombs as not knowing what
else was buried under the rubble it might prove highly dangerous.
Therefore, the safest act was to destroy in situ. (A sample of dynamite
was extracted for Government Analyst’s report).
6. This was arranged with the commissioner of Kyrenia
and the explosives and bombs in the hide were destroyed at 1000 hrs.
20th November, 1958.
